Lady Gaga Tickets – Xtina Aguilera Calls Out Gaga—and Then Smoothes Things Over

In the past several months, Lady Gaga has been a target for sniping by pop stars young and old. Most of the criticism has come from figures like Grace Jones and Joanna Newsomchanteuses who have carved their own niches in pop (or really indie-folk in Newsom's case) with the aid of some very colorful and unique costumes. Grace in particular has been pretty dismissive of Gaga, claiming that the 24-year-old newcomer to the pop scene has been seen on stage wearing the same kinds of outfits that Jones once used to shock Middle America. It even slipped out that when Gaga approached her about collaborating, Jones turned her down.

But the latest figure to weigh in on Gaga's pop gravitas is Christina Aguilera, aka Xtina, who not too long ago was shocking parents with her own scandalous outfits. Of course, Aguilera's costumes caused double-takes because of how skimpy they were. Gaga's are skimpy toosomething Newsom pointed out, comparing her to Britney Spearsbut they also take an out-there fashion bent that makes her unique.

Entertainment Weekly notes that in 2008, Christina Aguilera claimed she had no idea who or what Gaga was: "I'm not quite sure who this person is, to be honest. I don't know if it is a man or a woman. I just wasn't sure. I really don't spend any time on the Internet, so I guess I live a little under a rock in that respect."

There was another quote, much laterand much bitchierabout "the newcomer": "I think she's really fun to look at."

So could Xtina be looking to pick a fight? Not in the least, she said today, claiming that the media is egging one on, and that she has already been pulled into that in the past. She seems to be referring to the catty exchanges made between her and Britney Spears in the late '90s, when the two were pitted against one another for who would be the teen queen at the top of the charts. Going on to her homepage recently, Aguilera posted a brief message to fans about any static between her and Gaga, clearing the air and firmly denying there's any beef between them.

"It is very easy for comments to be taken out of context and create unnecessary drama-especially between us women. So I would like to tell you all directly so my words cannot be misconstrued to sell someone else's storyI have absolutely nothing against Lady Gaga or any other female artist in this business," she said.

She went on to praise Gaga for being "fearless" and for challenging the norm. She added: "There is room for all of us on everyone's iPods."

While Lady Gaga's appearance on the pop scene initially provoked some curt snark, she seems to have proved herself. Her critics are falling quiet, and most pop stars seem willing to accept her. Her fans are way ahead of them.
