Even if you didn't see the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards, you probably saw pictures of Lady Gaga and her meat dress it was a "rare" frock and we mean that literally. The pop singer-shockstress is known for her over-the-top stage costumes and cutting-edge street wear, just think back to the Kermit the Frog dress, the Disco Ball dress, the entire face-covering lace masks and hair hats. Worn onstage for her acceptance of the Video of the Year Award for "Bad Romance," Gaga surprised everyone with her not-so "well-done" wardrobe. She looked like a walking appetizer platter of beef capriccio lacking just the final dressing of olive oil and lemon juice. Even the "hard to outdo in the costume department" Cher, who was presenting the award to Miss Gaga, looked a little unsure about giving her the obligatory congratulations hug.
There is no doubt that Lady Gaga costumes are going to be huge for Halloween this year, there are already several styles that mimic her popular outfits on the store shelves already. However, some of these leotard and boot looks are going to look so pass when compared to the raw beef dress so push the expiration date on your style by suiting up in a version of the meat dress yourself. However, you may want to leave wearing real food products to the superstars who get paid big bucks to do so instead create a faux version of the meat Lady Gaga costume.
There are several reasons why it is not realistic to wear raw meat out and about. First, ewwww! Think of how cold and clammy it would feel against your skin. Second, the expense may be prohibitive when you consider getting a good cut of meat that can be silvered thin enough to drape like fabric and don't forget about the steak hat, shoes and clutch purse. Who knows how much the dress designer Franco Fernandez would charge for custom version. A final reason why a real meat costume might not be realistic, is just keeping it fresh. In many parts of the country, it can still be warm on Halloween and therefore cause you to create quite a stink in many ways!
A good idea to replicate the meat dress Lady Gaga costume is to purchase several yards of reddish-brown felt. The great thing about using felt (in addition to the fact it doesn't spoil) is that you can cut any shape you like and not worry about the edges fraying. Cut the felt out in big steak shapes and use white chalk or a white paint pen to draw in the fat marbling. The safety pin these pieces onto a leotard in a manner than looks something like a fashionable display of filets. For the final touches on this Lady Gaga costume, wear black fishnet hose, a cascading white wig, and lots of flashy rhinestone jewelry. A golden statuette and a microphone will make you look like you've just walked off the VMA stage. You can find all of these supplies and many more for your women's costumes at any online costume shop.
