Lady Gaga's newest album, Born This Way, which was released on 23 May, sits atop the UK Billboard sales charts moving a staggering amount of units. With 215,000 copies sold in the first week, Gaga not only outstrips the rest of the competition for the most albums sold last week, but she beat everyone else in the top 10 combined. And that is only hard copies. According to the latest celebrity news, when combined with the total number of digital versions sold the estimated total sales are expected to come in around 1.5 million copies. In one week.
215,000 narrowly skirts the first week numbers set by Adele when her newest album, 21, was released on 21 January, 2011. 21 spent a total of 16 weeks at the number one spot, including 11 weeks straight, which was the most number of weeks by a solo performing artist in the history of the UK Billboard charts. Adele's second album, which she called a breakup album after the much publicized breakdown of her relationship with an ex, has been certified eight-times platinum by the British Phonographic Industry. Interestingly, the drop of her second album, 21, to number two on the charts pushes her first album, 19, back to the third spot.
Gaga first started recording Born This Way during some downtime surrounding the 2010 Monster Ball Tour in London, Sydney, Miami and a host of other places around the world. Gaga told Larry King during an appearance on his show that after the veto of California's controversial Proposition 8 law, which was about legalising gay marriage, she went on a writing frenzy ending with far too many songs to fit on one album. She has constantly hinted that another album is not far behind this one however, it might take a while to organise properly as every one of her albums tells a story from beginning to end. The albums are acted out during the shows on her tour, complimented by some quirky celeb fashions and some other incredibly strange outfits.
The first single released on 11 February, "Born This Way,", quickly became the number one song in some twenty different countries worldwide according to Billboard and was their 1,000th number one song in America. On 19 April, Gaga released via video blog the second single from the album, "Judas", shortly followed by the release of the third single "The Edge of Glory" released on 11 May.
